Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils Explained

Asking about the difference between pure essential oils and fragrance oils is a little like asking what the difference is between natural and synthetic products. Both may have their pros and cons. Fragrance oils, for example, are cheaper to produce and more convenient whereas essential oils are of a better quality but harder to obtain in large quantities.

To really compare the two types of oil it is important to first understand what each of them are.

Source of the Oils

Essential oils are concentrated liquids derived from organic plant matter, and contain the strongest scents of that particular plant. It is for this reason that the oils are referred to as "essential".

Fragrance oils are highly concentrated synthetic compounds that have been mixed with a near scentless carrier oil. These artificial aroma compounds are lightweight which allow them to reach your scent receptors faster.

Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil Differ in Price

Pure natural oils are available in a range of prices, depending on the type, availability, brand, and season. Some essential oils (like sandalwood oil and rose oil) are more costly due to their complex extraction procedure. Sometimes, to fill a single bottle of oil, you need to extract from several plants which could drive up costs depending on the plant species. Lemon essential oil, for example, needs about 75 lemons to fill one 15ml bottle of oil.

Fragrance oils are competitively cheaper products because these products don't need a particular harvest season as they are manufactured in a lab. One single fragrance oil can be composed of 40-80 materials. These oils are safe, but sometimes the additions such as phthalates are not necessarily healthy. Fragrance oils are often used in many household items like detergent, cleaning products, hand soaps, air fresheners, etc.

Both Essential Oil and Fragrance Oil Smell Great

Fragrance oils are manufactured specifically for the purpose of delivering a strong scent that makes an impact. Essential oils have a difficult time providing the same scent profile per quantity of oil. This is primarily due to the fact that essential oils are not diluted with a carrier oil to extend their scent. Essential oils are presented to you in their purest, non-diluted form.

Capability in Aromatherapy

Pure essential oils contain natural ingredients and are used in aromatherapy to balance you mentally, emotionally, and physically. You can use them in several ways, such as through inhaling or applying topically. These oils can help boost your mood, relieve symptoms such as fatigue, inflammation, or pain, and improve your overall mental health.

On the other hand, fragrance oils while beautifully scented, do not have the same natural healing properties of essential oils. These fragrance oils are best for enhancing the aroma of any environment with their longer, lasting scents.
